This is a simple smoothie to get your morning off to a healthy start. I created this smoothie while we were in the Bahamas and didn’t have access to a wide variety of fruit. Pears, bananas, and blueberries were all easily accessible. These fruits are also generally very affordable – especially if you buy your frozen blueberries in bulk – so this is quite a budget-conscious smoothie as well.
Pears are very high in fiber and this smoothie provides almost half of your daily fiber requirement! New studies indicate that the skin of pears contains at least three to four times as many health-enhancing phytonutrients as the flesh. These include antioxidants, anti-inflammatory flavonoids, and potentially anti-cancer compounds such as cinnamic acids.
Blueberries are also a readily available and reliable source of antioxidants. Recent studies make it clear that freezing blueberries does not damage their delicate anthocyanin antioxidants. Evidence also suggests that regular consumption of blueberries can enhance cognitive function and improve memory.
For the best results make sure your pear is very ripe. The skin should be yellow and the fruit will yield easily under pressure. This will avoid the grainy texture that can occur from under-ripe pear and ensure that your smoothie is nice and sweet.
