Health Benefits of Green Smoothies

Reading Time: 3 minutes

These days just about everyone knows about the health benefits of green smoothies. Until fairly recently blended green drinks were only found in the fringe of the health food community. Now the smoothie shop at my local shopping mall offers green smoothies alongside their regular yogurt and milk blends.

The Discovery of Green Smoothies

Ann Wigmore was one of the first people to introduce the public to the concept of eating blended greens for better health. She is well known for her “Energy Soup”, which included leafy greens, blended with a variety of other ingredients. Wigmore would feed her patients nothing but energy soup for three months and they commonly reported a complete recovery from a wide variety of serious diseases.

Victoria Boutenko has more recently popularized green smoothies that involve blending leafy greens with sweet fruit. After eleven years on a 100% raw food diet that initially resulted in alleviation of their major health issues, Victoria and her family found that they were still suffering from stubborn health problems including fatigue, warts, gray hair and sensitive teeth.

Victoria was determined to find a solution and she spent a great deal of time researching nutrition and examining different foods in order to discover what was the missing factor in her family’s diet.

Humans are Designed to Eat Leafy Greens

After looking in detail at the diets of other primates she eventually realized that this missing element was an abundant intake of green leafy vegetables. After some experimentation, she developed green smoothies as a way to allow for high consumption of greens that promotes the optimal absorption of nutrients in a form that is not only edible but also quite delicious.

By blending sweet fruit and greens together with a little water in a ratio of approximately 40% greens and 60% fruit, the dominant flavor is sweet. The fruit masks the bitterness of the greens and the greens help to take the edge of the sweetness off the fruit.

After a few weeks of consuming two bunches of greens daily in the form of green smoothies, Victoria and her family noticed dramatic improvements in all of the health problems that had failed to get better on a standard raw food diet. They also observed that their cravings for fatty and spicy foods were alleviated.

Since Victoria’s discovery, many people all over the world have become aware of the healing power of green smoothies and they are now even making their way into mainstream nutrition. This is probably because not only do they result in major health improvements, they also taste great, and are an enjoyable way to boost our intake of fresh fruits and vegetables.

How to Make a Green Smoothie

If you have never tried a green smoothie before I recommend starting with milder greens like lettuce and spinach and combining them with a sweet fruit such as mango or banana.

At first, just add a few leaves and gradually increase the amount of greens over time. You will probably be surprised at how subtle the greens taste when prepared this way.

Eventually, when you become a green smoothie veteran, you can work your way up to a 50/50 mix of greens and fruit, or perhaps even more.
