Since arriving in Malaysia just over a month ago we’ve been pleasantly surprised how progressive this country is regarding organic food. My husband and I have traveled in many Southeast Asian countries and nowhere else has so much good organic food so widely available. Even regular grocery stores here carry a selection of fresh organic fruits and vegetables.
Being in a big city like Kuala Lumpur offers even more choices. We’ve made a few discoveries since we’ve been here and one of the best is the Living Food Bistro & Cafe. This is a cafe/restaurant that offers raw food cuisine alongside healthier versions of cooked food favorites including both vegan meals as well as creations to suit the most devoted of carnivores. Best of all they offer home delivery!
So rather than brave the Kuala Lumpur traffic we’ve taken advantage of their service on quite a few occasions. We’ve enjoyed everything we’ve tried from their varied menu so far and it’s even better when it comes delivered right to your doorstep!
Here are just a few of their healthy vegan offerings. No doubt I will be posting more again as this has quickly become our favorite restaurant in Kuala Lumpur.
Raw Smoothies
Living Food offers a range of dairy-free, sugar-free, whole-fruit smoothies as well as invigorating “elixirs”. Pictured below is the “Morning Spark” – a refreshing combination of leafy greens, pineapple, passionfruit, and chia seeds.
Some of the other blends we’ve enjoyed include:
Popeye – leafy greens, apple, cucumber and chlorophyll
The Hulk – plant protein, spirulina, hemp seed and pineapple
Anti Oxidant – dragon fruit, banana, leafy greens, chia seed
Cardiac Arrest – passionfruit, lemon, pineapple, and L-Arginine
Raw Appetizers – Living Light Bites
To start the meal you can try their Sample Platter or Guacamole and Orange Salsa. Both come with tasty, crispy flax crackers and tantalizing flavors to whet your appetite.
The sample platter includes crudites, guacamole, and a cultured probiotic nut cream to get your stomach ready to digest the rest of the meal.
The Main Event: Vegan Entrees
We’re still working our way through the menu but some of the meals we’ve tried so far include:
Mekong Salad – Glass noodles, spiral carrots, and cucumber with caramelized onions in zesty kefir lime dressing
Genmai Lui Cha – a very grounding meal containing a broth of nine different types of herbs and genmai tea served with quinoa, tofu, leafy greens, and preserved veggies.
Mushroom Pattie – dehydrated mushroom & seeds, served with sliced heirloom tomato, guacamole, sprouts, caramelized onion and quinoa salad.
Raw Desserts
It’s been a while since I’ve been anywhere offering raw desserts so I couldn’t resist sampling some of their “raw indulgences”. The raw chefs here have a good grasp of raw cuisine and their desserts are no exception.
For a sweet treat try the Cream Pocket which is a raw banana and almond crepe filled with sliced bananas and a sensuously sweet cashew vanilla cream.
The Black Forest Brownie is a decadent delight consisting of a chocolate brownie with just the right texture and not too much sweetness. This was complemented with a cherry/raspberry compote and sweet vanilla nut cream.
It’s been so wonderful to find a healthy eating establishment that really cares about what they are offering their customers. If you ever find your way to Kuala Lumpur I highly recommend a visit to Living Foods Bistro.
